End clap for Mix'Art Myrys . The self-managed artist collective operating near Pont-Jumeaux in Toulouse must close its doors in April 2024 at the request of the town hall. A unique place that lived between illegality and legitimacy and especially in uncertainty since 2021.
A deadline set for April 8
"After 18 years, Rue Ferdinand Lassalle, preceded by 10 years of illegal and legitimate occupations in Toulouse,we must fold up shop, without certainty to this day that it will continue the adventure, shortly, later and elsewhere.", indicated the cultural collective on its Facebook page to announce the official end of this adventure strewn with pitfalls. And to specify: "We have obtained additional time to vacate our premises on rue Ferdinand Lassalle. Ultimatum postponed to April 8. Continue!".
< p>While waiting for the definitive closure of their creative spaces, the teams are putting on sale, during the month of March, in the parking lot of the site on rue Ferdinand-Lassalle all the objects collected: from works of art to artistic materials.
Return to this cultural association
The association was launched in 1995 with the occupation of the former Myrys shoe factories in the St Cyprien-Patte d'district Goose. Since then, an eclectic group of people - arts and artists of all kinds (visual arts, live performance, video, music, construction workshop, hacker space, photo lab), undocumented or even homeless - have invested in this space to create, survive, meet, invent...
It was in 1997 that the name of Mix'Art Myrys was born and after a few years of success, the place became one of the busiest in the Pink City; so much so that in 2005, the collective and the public authorities agreed on a rehousing solution at the famous 12 rue Ferdinand Lassalle... until this Wednesday, January 20, 2021, the date of the administrative closure < /strong>acted by the town hall, due to the non-compliance of the premises.
And finally, in a decision rendered on December 1, 2023, the Toulouse judicial court ordered the release of the warehouse located in the Pont district -Jumeaux, not far from the lateral canal of the Garonne.
A new school instead?
In place of this vast hangar with almost 9,000 m2 of courtyard and interior, Toulouse Métropole (owner of the building), would like to build a school group. A new school which could, if the project moves forward, see the light of day by 2026 and would thus relieve congestion in Toulouse's already busy establishments.
Defined as a project location workshops and residencies of local artists, researchers, builders, associations in the cultural, digital, knowledge, technical, social and solidarity economy fields, Mix'Art Myrys hopes to be reborn, elsewhere.
