Since Saturday May 4, 2024, part of the Piste des Géants in Montaudran has been under construction and for good reason ! It is about to become a 4.5 hectare wooded park. A new, greener, more zen and fresher era for this old aeronautical runway which has seen many exploits!
A new life for the Pistes des Géants
At the entrance (or almost) to the Halle de la Machine is the Aéropostale pioneers' runway, also called the Giants' Runway, or 1.8 km of bitumen which served as a exploits in 1918 then to Air France for the maintenance of its planes until 2003. If its northern part is now untouchable because it is classified as a Historic Monument, its southern part will change its face!< /p>
Leaving from Place Marcel Bouilloux-Lafont and the UGC cinema, the unclassified part will actually be transformed into a large wooded park of more than 4 hectares where 1,639 trees of 'different species – but carefully chosen – will have to grow.
Large work on the site
Since Saturday May 4 and until spring 2026, large-scale work will therefore be committed to making it a true haven of peace at the gates of Toulouse: 28,000 m2 of track surface will be demolished until the fall of 2024, 18,000 m2 of open ground will be planted, 2,000 m2 leisure areas (children's play area, sports equipment, basketball court, sliding course, ping-pong tables, pétanque courts, etc.) will be installed and 1.2 km of cycle path will be added.
Installations which should change the urban landscape and improve the quality of life of local residents and other curious strollers.
From gray slope to green lung of Toulouse
< p>To lower the temperature by 4 to 5 degrees or even offer islands of freshness, beds of greenery will accommodate picnic areas and pétanque courts near shops; groves will revegetate, ventilate and refresh the space for ultimate comfort; while the future Forum should enclose the park thanks to its large tree-lined lawn on which young and old will be able to preface, enjoy the multiple activities and the XXL space.
