Fat bike, zipline, freeride: 3 activities to try this winter at the Grand Tourmalet

The Grand Tourmalet resort, the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees located in Occitanie region, opened its slopes (and its doors) last Saturday, December 16. And in addition to descents on skis, snowboards or sleds, here are three ideas for fun activities that you can do alone or with others.

Tyrolean ice for a suspended ride

We put down the skis and treat ourselves to a pure moment of adrenaline with the Tyrolean ice at Vertige de l'adour, just a stone's throw away from the Grand Tourmalet station towards La Mongie. Equipped with a harness, a helmet, pulleys and lanyards, this 1h30 outdoor activity offers the most daring a magnificent suspended ride above the frozen and snowy waterfalls.

Accessible to all, it is therefore an opportunity to discover, with family or friends, the magical world of the high mountains, under the supervision of instructor guides. To do day or night! Indeed, the little novelty of the year is the evening session organized from time to time with organic mulled wine offered for 45 euros / person.

A freeride descent of the Pic du Midi for an (extra) strong sensation

The high mountain area of the Pic du Midi is classified among the 50 most beautiful sites in the world according to the English journalist Patrick Thorn and to access it, all you have to do is take the cable car. Then several possibilities for descents are available to you:

  • From the summit, at 2877 meters above sea level, it is possible to do some slopes (but be careful! A good knowledge of high mountains is necessary, as well as the use of suitable equipment):

- La Mongie side to Artigues-Campan, the "la Coume du Pic" route with its 1700 m drop for 10 km of descent.
- Barèges side to the Tourmalet chairlift, the Pic du Midi packages include the return to La Mongie by this ski lift.

  • From the Taoulet intermediate station, at 2341 meters, the "la Jaune", "la Verte" or "la Violette" routes are in line with the routes from the Pic du Midi.
